As I watched an online event yesterday morning about Canada's AVRO Arrow interceptor plane project demonstrating to the world Canada's enginuity and forward thinking (albeit during cold war times), I was reminded by specific examples and exhibits of the host the monumental pace of development that occurred within a decade and a half from the planes used in the world war to the 50s.
Canada was standing on top of the world with the fastest plane in the world and proudly, shamelessly and necessarily displaying its military might. Then one "black Friday", ordered by Diefenbaker, everyone was fired from the program, the planes and technology destroyed by welding torch and the design plans, memories, prototypes were all made to disappear as if Canada had no hand in this at all. Who knew that drastic day would set the tone for generations later to quietly and slowly build a movement of cancellation of anything to do with development and progress in improving our Canadians lives so long as it impacted one molecular level of carbon, certain types of the tens of billions of trees or a migratory route for adaptive and evolutionary organisms, that may not even be home to Canada.
