A Near Term View from David Rosenberg, Memories of 1989 to 1996 and How to Quickly Calculate GDP Impacts

 https://financialpost.com/news/economy/home-price-plunge-recession-david-rosenberg

"...The last time all these factors were at play was the early 1990s, when Canada entered a Bank of Canada-induced recession and residential property prices fell by almost 30 per cent from their peak between 1989-1996.

While consumption is set to slow because of the multitude of factors mentioned above, the wealth effect will also contribute negatively. If home prices end up falling 30 per cent from the peak — which we view as consistent with deteriorating affordability and the uber-aggressive tightening of monetary policy by the Bank of Canada — consumption would fall about five per cent (using the central bank’s estimate of nearly six cents per dollar of marginal propensity to consume due to changes in housing wealth), and this translates to a hit of roughly 2.5 percentage points to annual GDP growth..."

What is Canada's Supreme Court Thinking? Softer and Softer on Sentenci g, Parole and Now Sex Offender Registry

"...Mandatory listing on Canada’s sex offender registry is, for some offenders, an unjustified infringement on their liberty that is not rationally connected to the goal of investigating or preventing sexual crimes, the Supreme Court ruled Friday.

Automatic lifetime listing in the case of multiple sexual offences is similarly “overbroad,” the court decided in striking down both laws to permit discretion by sentencing judges.

The decision means Eugene Ndhlovu, an Edmonton man who molested a sleeping woman and groped another at a party, will not be subject to a mandatory lifetime listing on the sex offender registry. Having served a two year sentence and probation, he will be free of its many reporting requirements, surveillance schemes, and non-compliance penalties that include jail time..."

Two weeks into the mandatory inquiry and still no answers or evidence from or for the NDPLiberals' decision for Emergencies Act

 .

"...Senator Donald Plett, the leader of the Opposition in the Senate, said the government was asking people to “trust us.”

“No credible explanation has been provided as to why the government needed these unprecedented and potentially dangerous tools,” he told the Senate during the debate.

However, Justice Paul Rouleau, the judge heading the commission looking into the invocation of the Emergencies Act, may finally get some answers. He requested that the Liberals waive cabinet confidentiality over documents related to the invocation, and they agreed.

Just what is in those documents and how it affected the decision of the government has yet to be revealed..."

How Politicians Use Language to Wriggle out of Emergencies Act Responsibilities: Not Quite the Redefinitions of "Request", "Advice", "Recommendation" As Expected

"...The legal picture has been blurred by unhelpful bureaucratic jargon, especially the term “ideologically motivated violent extremism.” That phrase is not found in the Emergencies Act, the CSIS Act, or the Criminal Code of Canada, which refers to terrorism. The confusion wrought by this unnecessary yet fashionable euphemism stems principally from it frequently and lamentably being abridged to “extremism,” a descriptor that is far broader and even more imprecise than what it replaced. But to be clear: the FLQ were terrorists. People with views outside of the mainstream are not, regardless of how divergent those views are. To be properly subjected to emergency powers, they must have been acting in support of terrorists who were already engaged in serious violence...."

Debunking the Reasons for Emergencies Act: "Because I Read It in the Media" Is Not a Reason(s) to Accept Events That Cannot be Proven and Invoke the Act

https://nationalpost.com/opinion/rupa-subramanya-justin-trudeaus-case-against-the-freedom-convoy-falls-on-its-face

"...It’s striking how many public officials, including outgoing Ottawa mayor Jim Watson, outgoing city councillor Mathieu Fleury, and would be mayor Catherine McKenney, made strong claims that the protesters were violent and destructive. For example, Watson claimed that protesters were ripping masks off local residents, but when challenged under cross examination, he admitted he didn’t see this himself but heard about it in media reports. This was a refrain from many of the public officials making these assertions about the protesters, and when challenged referred to hearing about it in the media. This was a classic case of the tail wagging the dog, as some media reports were largely parroting the narrative of the public officials without providing much if any documentary evidence..."

Trudeau, Like His Father's Admiration for Russia, Has Sown the Seeds For Resource Destruction And Any Energy Help For Western Allies, Improving Putin's Stance

"...Has he [Trudeau] offered to build a natural gas pipeline and LNG projects in Eastern Canada to help Germany and Europe permanently replace Russian gas?   Instead, Trudeau turned down Germany which was hoping to get a deal to import LNG from Atlantic Canada. But Australia did not and within days of rejection by Canada, German utility Uniper signed an enormous deal with an Australian company to bring in more natural gas. Even Norway, another virtue-signalling petro-giant, has boosted production to help Europe fight against Russia’s war against Ukraine and the continent.   Ducking an opportunity to help defeat Vladimir Putin is hardly surprising given that Trudeau’s regime has destroyed all but one of the 18 proposed LNG projects in Canada in the past decade with its destructive, anti-resource agenda..."

Not a good opening face off for NDPLiberals in Emergency Measures Act Inquiry

Not a good opening face off for NDPLiberals

"...But Lakehead University law professor Ryan Alford made an opening statement that gets to the nub of the inquiry: the federal government has to prove it met the legal standard for using the emergency provision of last resort.

Alford said that in its opening statement the government of Canada’s counsel, Robert MacKinnon, had said Ottawa had a “reasonable basis” for declaring a public order emergency.

“Unfortunately, a reasonable basis is not a legal, let alone constitutional, basis for using unprecedented and destructive emergency powers,” he said...."

The Beginning of Emergency Measures Act Inquiry 1

"...From the CCF’s perspective, the fundamental question is whether the condition in the final clause of Section 3 of the Emergencies Act was met — that the Ottawa protests and border blockades could not be effectively dealt with under any other law of Canada, federal, provincial or municipal. This clause codifies the requirement that the Emergencies Act is a last resort, which can only be triggered when all other legal tools fall short.

And in the CCF’s view, that condition was clearly not met: as in Coutts and Windsor, the Ottawa protests were cleared using existing police powers. Evidence of former Ottawa police chief Peter Sloly recently disclosed confirms that the plan to clear protestors — including bringing 1,800 additional officers from across Canada to Ottawa — was in place without the declaration of the Emergencies Act...."

 All perception, no substance NDPLiberals

One issue is when the government releases a list of names only, with no other identifying information, as is the case for some of the currently sanctioned individuals, it’s left to the banks to determine whether they’re targeting the assets of the right individual..."

NDPLiberals Adding More Ingredients to Inflation, an Overburdened Healthcare System and Failing Ability to Issue Passports

In a world of supply chain issues and rising costs, the NDPLiberals want to add 1 million new entrants/permanent residents to Canada and allowing at least 10,000 parents/grand parents per year over two years as part of a unification program of permanent residents (not necessarily Canadians)

How Many Times Does Canada's Virtuous, Vote Generating Immigration System Have to Fail Canadians in its Pursuit of Demographic and Skills Failures

How the Canadian immigration system has been a demographic failure for decades with a chronically "aging population", nevermind impacts on pensions, healthcare, labour pools, birth rates and of course inflation.  Time to discuss taking the beloved, virtuous, vote generating immigration institution out of government hands and making it independent like the Courts, Bank of Canada, etc. and based on real data, trends and economic forecasts.

Of All the Top Priority Issues and Politicsl Causes on Canada, The NDPLiberals Decided on the the Most Irrelevant Yet Woke One: Climate Change

"...How ever did global warming become the principal policy and obsession of the government of this vast, cold, main northern nation? If Canada were one of those tiny islands that shoot out warnings that they will be submerged in the apocalypse-to-come, it might be understandable.

But Canada? Here’s a raw question too rarely asked — what’s our concern in all this? Why is global warming the principal and sternest policy of a Canadian government? Can we change China, India, Russia by our example? Beyond the burnishing of Trudeau’s credentials as the most self-advertised woke politician, what is it all about? Is Canada a heat furnace? Does Newfoundland threaten the global thermostat?..."

If Canadians Speaking To Other Canadians Do Not Believe How Bad The Canadian Liberals Are, Then Look to Australia

"...Canada is a chronic underachiever, a condition caused by poor political decisions and the failure to address unresolved issues, said Canada’s former central bank chief Stephen Poloz at the recent Global Business Forum in Banff.

“We get in our own way,” he said, then listed a few problems: “A political quagmire that requires a crisis to make decisions”; “layers of regulation”; “permit and consultation that take ages to complete”; “Canada is one of the most highly taxed economies on Earth which is discouraging”; “interprovincial barriers that cost four per cent a year in GDP alone to Canada”; and falling foreign investment and disinvestment by Canadians to the U.S., among others...."
