"Ontario has the highest subnational debt of any jurisdiction in the world at $338 billion and the debt-to-GDP ratio is an uncomfortable 39 per cent"...IN THE WORLD!!!!!
"The commission’s report also goes into painstaking detail into the extraordinary steps that the previous Liberal government took to make sure that billions of dollars were excluded from the publicly reported deficit. The extent of this scheme was unprecedented, which is why a select committee of Ontario’s legislature has been struck to get to the bottom of this scandal."

To The Finish - Ontario LIberals Are Still Out of Touch With Ontarians. The Liberals' Record Below...
I have tried to find a concise excerpt that would set the tone and give some sense to the magnitude of the gaffes, arrgonace, incompetence, values bending, financial absuridty and recklessness this provincial governnent has exuded over the years. However, that was impossible. Here is MOST of the article with all credit due to Financial Post author, Kelly McParland
http://nationalpost.com/opinion/kelly-mcparland-the-liberals-dont-know-why-wynne-is-unpopular-maybe-i-can-help-with-that#comments-area
"...Wynne ran as an upgrade from her predecessor, Dalton McGuinty. She didn’t like the scandals, the gas plant closings, the dirty little deals. She’d bring transparency and openness. She promised to be better, and didn’t deliver — not even close. She blatantly sold access to herself and her top cabinet members to the highest bidders, treating the payments as “donations.” When exposed she refused to back down until public pressure forced it on her. No one pays big bucks to politicians unless they expect something in return, and Wynne’s blatant use of her office to fill party coffers only exacerbated the cynicism and distrust that had grown up during the McGuinty years.
She pandered shamelessly to public-sector unions, especially the teachers’ unions that poured tens of millions of dollars into campaigns to keep her in office. To retain their support she used public funds to finance generous contracts, including millions of dollars quietly handed over to help the unions pay their negotiating costs. Her education minister didn’t ask for receipts, and — when caught — responded with a hauteur that came to be a government characteristic. “We know what the food costs. We know what 100 pizzas costs. You don’t need to see every bill when you’re doing an estimate of costs,” said Liz Sandals. They handed over the money despite learning the secondary school teachers had a $65 million reserve fund to pay bargaining costs. Did that sway Wynne’s ministers? Not a chance: Deputy Premier Deb Matthews admitted she was unaware of the fund, and wasn’t all that interested: “I don’t know if that fund exists. I don’t know what it’s for. I’m not going to comment on OSSTF finances,” she said.
Wynne’s government treated critics with disdain. When Auditor-General Bonnie Lysyk ruled that Liberals were breaking their own rules by using government advertisements to promote the party, Wynne took away her veto power. When both Lysyk and the Financial Accountability Office challenged the government’s budget math — suggesting they were off by billions of dollars — the premier ignored them. When Lysyk revealed a $2 billion hydro project had cost twice as much as expected, Energy Minister Bob Chiarelli suggested Lysyk was too dim to understand the complex issue — despite having spent 10 years at Manitoba Hydro. Such condescending behaviour by a non-Liberal would have had gender-sensitive Liberal “progressives” demanding resignations, but Chiarelli was a Liberal so the government let it go.
When she took over from McGuinty, Wynne stressed her concern over provincial finances. “It is obviously critical that we tackle the deficit and get to the point that we are paying down debt,” she said. Then her government racked up one staggering deficit after another, adding tens of billions of dollars to a debt that had already doubled under her predecessor. Finance Minister Charles Sousa insisted the government would eventually balance the budget, eventually claiming to have done so in the year before the election, but only by using accounting tricks that shifted tens of billions of dollars in borrowing off the official tally. Sousa pledged several more years of “balance,” then reversed himself 12 months later, announcing a return to borrowing so the Liberals could finance a raft of new spending promises in the weeks before the election.
Even then he couldn’t bring himself to be honest: the government’s projected $6.7 billion annual deficit was quickly shown to be $11.7 billion, with similar miscalculations stretching into the 2020s, eventually totalling as much as $50 billion. Lysyk, required by law to review the books before an election, found the numbers so dodgy she announced they couldn’t be trusted, and accused the government of deliberately hiding documents to keep her in the dark. It was a flagrant attempt to buy votes with borrowed money, so glaring that offended voters saw through the ruse and Liberal fortunes fell further. Yet it reflected once again the government’s astonishingly low opinion of is constituents, and its assumption they were too apathetic, ignorant or disengaged to know when they were being conned.
Throughout Wynne’s five years in office, her government regularly prioritized the well-being of the party over those of the province. Hydro One was sold off to produce some quick cash for transit projects, but at the cost of hundreds of millions of dollars in annual revenue produced by the provincial utility. The debt so relentlessly piled up by the government will impact voters for a generation to come: the $1 billion Ontario spends on interest payments every 30 days is the equivalent of a new hospital every month. When the government complains it lacks the resources to meet demands from doctors, colleges and universities, think of that monthly billion-dollar tab and what it could be doing if it wasn’t being spent on interest..."

Dude, Where's Jim Carr? Liberals Doing A Commendable Job Of Keeping Canada's Resources Landlocked And Worthless
It's official, 1) Justin and his merry band of Liberals have just shown who their "favourite child (province)" is as well as 2) provinces can now over-ride the Government of Canada on Federal Issues. I'm tired of paying Federal tax - can the province throw that out the window too? Oh wait, Kathleen receives $20 Billion to $25 Billion from the feds annually.
After having APPROVED the pipeline and previously making comments about "military" clearing the way if warranted (later "apologizing" - a lot of apologies in this Liberal government), where oh where is Natural Resources Minister Jim Carr these days?

"Quebec Cuts Business Taxes in Fourth-Straight Balanced Budget" - Bloomberg
Yes, you read that right!
"...Fiscal balance “is not an obsession, it’s a necessity,” Finance Minister Carlos Leitao told reporters Tuesday in Quebec City after releasing his budget. “If you can’t balance the budget at the top of the business cycle when can you?”..."
"...Quebec will raise C$23 million in excise duties on the sale of marijuana once it’s legalized in Canada later this year. That will rise to C$50 million in 2019-20..."

Canada: The Christmas Economy...Now the Hangover Starts, Especially in Ontario
With interesting job numbers from December, that coincidentally aligned with the biggest shopping season of the year, for Christmas, in which The Justin bragged briefly about even while frittering around at Davos (when not scolding the world on gender rights, climate change, fair trade, human rights, etc), they have vanished much like Santa on Christmas eve. Maybe for another year (or in this case, maybe not for many years).
Unlike the media who has covered such stories lately on a "guilty until proven innocent" basis, let's take a different approach - jobs data has deteriorated, Ontario lost most of those, Christmas is over and this province wakes up to higher minimum wage costs. Discuss among yourselves....

Government of Canada Web Site Has Changed English "O Canada"; French Version Continues to Have Five References to "Our"
Well that took a while. The new "word" is reflected in the English version. Meanwhile, in the French version, still five references to "our" (nos) and no mentions of sons, daughters, him, her, he, she....
Is "eh" gender neutral?

A Plethora of Easy Targets Today For The Justin, The Ontario Liberals
Today, The Justin is frittering time away in Davos extolling the virtues of Canada and business opportunties, yet the Liberals cannot complete a trade deal with China, NAFTA looks like it is collapsing, but oh wait! Just in, a TPP deal has been completed, but nowhere near its envisioned form. With only seasonal December jobs strength (from temporary Christmas shopping seasonality....ummm, "holiday seasonality") to brag about, and an all important NAFTA agreement about to be ripped up, we will see what economic strength and opportunities therein lie for the future in Canada. I suspect if there is a decent Swiss coffee break after the Justin's speech, that will be the only way there will be a packed house. Otherwise the crowd's attendance will dive like this author expects the Loonie to do in 2018.
Also, the federal Liberals are pushing their agenda and offending just about every religious group out there with its "like it or lump it" approach to funding tens of thousands of summer jobs primarily aimed at students, no matter what group or cause the application comes from. The views center around abortion choices and of course the Liberals have managed to manufacture their own language and laws around this as technically, (and with the highest degree of respect) although a woman (or jointly with a partner) can make a choice about abortion, there has been no woman's right passed with regards to this.
Meanwhile, the Provincial Ontario Liberals could not be suffering more from "on the hot seat" syndrome with all past multi-billion dollar gaffes and atrocities merely dismissed as "the days of old (McGuinty)". Despite a recent member being found guilty, other members appearing in a Sudbury court and with their favourite colleague Kathleen Wynn also on the stand to testify, WHAT MORE WRONG CAN THIS GOVERNMENT DO?
Well...in secret recognition of that, the Liberals have rammed down Ontarians' throats a new minimum wage regime (lacking any debate, economic studies, or consultation with businesses), are rolling out aggressively generous and new prescription and dental benefits, not to mention their flirting with pensions, and always appeasing the society (cult) of Ontario Teachers as well as all union-based groups.
Sadly, as Canadian voters at large are focused not on "the greater good of the country" but "what can you do for me", these two groups are likely to be voted in again in five months and two years time respectively from today.

Bitcoin's Cracks of Volatility Beginning to Show: Buckle Up, the Ride Has Only Started
Finally the volatility and wild swings (yes even downward) are happening.
No doubt, some upward swings to follow and the "I told you so crowd" will have their moment. Only to be hit negatively again.
On another note, I was enlightened a little more yesterday by a long term friend as to what "mining" is, as it relates to crypto currencies and how this is performed. Or, from what I understand, "rewarded" for providing the infrastructure and, most importanly, the power to perform the gazillion of calculations needed to build blocks of the block chain, ledgers, verify transactions, etc. (did I use the right terminology in that last sentence?).
Also combined with an article in the Financial Post that jurisdictions of cheap power (Ontario and the provincial Liberals, this is NOT you!), are expected to be the hubs of this infrastructure driven technology. Hello crypto-BC, crypto-Manitoba, crypto-Quebec!

There's Math...And Then There is "Liberal Math"
When someone asks the hypothetical question, "if you could invite anyone over for dinner, who would be your six guests?", I have started to think about the following response - our unethical Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his unethical, over spending, over taxing Finance Minister Bill Morneau and ANY high school accounting teacher. Why don't we throw in Kathleen Wynn and her over spending, over taxing Finance Minister Charles Sousa.
A high school accounting teacher should be enough to clear the definitions of what a "balanced budget" is (hint, it does not involve going $5.0B into debt or recieving ~20% of revenues in handouts from the Feds...Kathleen), and that mult-billion dollar deficits do matter and should be considered in paying them down otherwise over time they will hurt you.
Then once learned, let either i) the revelations or ii) the squirming begin...

...And a Summary of Canada 2018 from Bloomberg
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-01-03/trudeau-embraces-the-economy-just-as-it-begins-to-gear-down
In deflecting all the nonsense that both Justin and his "trusted" Finance Minister Morneau found themselves in (thanks to Liberal above-the-law entitlement), now Trudeau wants to highlight the economy. This coming from a leader who piles on deficits upon deficits.
The thing is, when did employment dipping below 6.0% become something to brag about? Especially after it has taken nine years to recover form the global financial crisis of 2008. Historical averages have been ~4.0%.
More smoke and mirrors from the Justin and his merry band of over taxing Liberals.

The Outlook for 2018 in Canada - No January Effect Here
http://business.financialpost.com/investing/canada-stocks-set-for-meager-gains-in-2018-strategists-say
Happy New Year. It is the early days of 2018 and with all early January print (and non print) media, predictions are abound.
It's always difficult to be in the role in portraying yourself as the holder of a crystal ball; however, as of New Year's day, Canada woke up to a new federal carbon tax (thank you Justin, McKenna), while in Ontario, a new day has brought higher minimum wages (thank you Kathleen) that are impacting thousands of small businesses across the province...overnight.
While the banks, telecoms and REIT's are chugging along on our TSX and (paying some great dividends in some cases), Canada's bread and butter resource industries (mining, oil and gas) have no returns to brag about, not to mention a very real risk now of a NAFTA-less world and a house of cards real estate market. As such, the question of how long legalized marijuana growing companies will be around (in other words, when will the bubble burst?) must be asked as it is the only bright spot on a publicly traded basis currently.
As any curious neighbour would look over the fence into the adjacent backyard, Canada must wake up and look around to other countries and economies - other than the U.S. Remember that looming NAFTA renegotiation?
Also of note, with Ontario elections coming up in 2018 (in six months) and federal elections in 2019, we are not far off to see the lingering effects of these impacts.

Politics, Elected Leaders, Views of Economic Engines: USA vs Canada
In the USA today - tax cuts, doubling child care tax credits and a speech about "our great farmers" and "our great small business owners" by their elected leader, the President.
Meanwhile in Canada, tax increases, child care reductions, and a vindictive view of farmers, doctors, store keepers because for liability purposes they are structured around a corporation. Oh, and that comes from our Finance Minister because our elected leader, the Prime Minister is too busy apologizing.

Monday Funny: Wynne Suing for "Harm" to her Reputation - Just Think About That for a Second...
http://nationalpost.com/news/politics/newsalert-ontario-premier-sues-opposition-leader-for-defamation-2
“The deliberate, malicious conduct of the defendant in publishing the defamatory statements is part of an ongoing campaign engineered by the defendant and others to harm the plaintiff’s reputation,”
"Harm"?!?! This is the Premier of Ontario with the lowest approval rating - ever! Of any Premier! And she is suing due to reasons of the "plaintiff's reputation"?
Wow, I never laughed so hard commuting to work on a Monday morning.
